WSDC Team Malaysia

The World Schools Debating Championships takes place every year at a location that is unique to its previous host. Since WSDC 2012, the Malaysian contingent has come under the wing of the Malaysian Institute for Debate & Public Speaking. With a structured programme and enforced by local talents of the varsity debating scene, the Malaysian World Schools Debate Team made history by reaching the Quarterfinals of the World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) 2015 which was held in Singapore. This marks the most successful ever outing for Malaysia at WSDC after reaching the round of 16 in last year’s edition held in Thailand.

MIDP ensures that the selections process for the team is equitable, disciplined and structured. National level selections are held first and often sees a number of about 150 – 200 secondary school students. The team is then finalised and put through many training programmes and made to compete at local varsity and regional tournaments.

The team were under the guidance of Coach Don Siron Pereira, who is Director of Training & Development at the Malaysian Institute for Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP) and currently Research Officer in the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He has been coaching the Malaysia WSDC team for the past 4 years.

MIDP is recognised as the national debate experts under the Ministry of Education and is responsible for selecting, training and funding the Malaysian WSDC Team to attend the World Schools Debating Championships since 2012. Fast forward to the present, Malaysia has now climbed the WSDC World Rankings and is currently ranked Top 10 in the world. Malaysia is also poised to be promoted from Grade ‘B’ to Grade ‘A’ in the WSDC Rankings, joining the likes of Canada, England and Australia in the highest tier of international school debating.

MIDP strives to facilitate a healthy, competitive and intellectual developmental programme that aims to achieve more than we ever have in the past. The increase in a transparent and open platform for selections has produced an energizing effect on the Malaysian Schools Debating scene in general. We aim to increase this effect and generate higher quality debaters for WSDC Malaysia.
